The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in collaboration with the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC), have launched the 1st National Workshops on Ethics and Clinical Research to strengthen Tanzania’s capacity to generate ethical, high-quality research evidence that is critical for improving healthcare outcomes.
The workshop equips health professionals with essential knowledge and practical skills in ethics and clinical research while highlighting regional support mechanisms that are available through EAHRC to promote research excellence.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, NIMR Director General, Prof. Said S. Aboud, emphasized the central role of research in improving public health outcomes across East Africa and urged participants to utilise existing health data to generate meaningful evidence actively.
“We already have a wealth of data in our health facilities. What we must do is to transform the available health data into research evidence. Turning data into actionable knowledge is key to advancing evidence-based healthcare,” he said.
The Director of Research Coordination and Promotion, Dr. Nyanda Ntinginya, oversaw the conduct of this landmark national workshop.
The East African Health Research Commission serves as a regional advisory body supporting knowledge generation, technological advancement, and harmonized research practices across East Africa.
The five-day intensive training, held from 17th–21st February 2026 at the Golden Tulip Hotel, in Dar es Salaam brought together health professionals from across Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar including clinicians, epidemiologists, researchers, academicians, and other experts from Government and private institutions such as research organizations, universities, hospitals, and NGOs. NIMR has formal MoUs with many of these institutions fostering structured collaborations that support capacity building, mentorship and promotion of health research particularly among early career scientists. The workshop thus aimed to strengthen research capacity and promote ethical evidence-based healthcare across the region.
