Dodoma Capacity Statement
NIMR Dodoma Research Centre Profile
The NIMR Dodoma Research Centre, located in Dodoma, Tanzania, was established in 2018 to address the critical and growing health challenges in the central zone of Tanzania. These challenges include both Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Communicable Diseases (CDs), such as vector-borne and infectious diseases, as well as mental health concerns. The centre focuses on conducting comprehensive research to assess the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors associated with various health issues in the region, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, mental health, dengue, and malaria. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) program, NIMR Dodoma aims to evaluate and implement preventive interventions that can significantly reduce the disease burden, contributing to improved health outcomes in the central zone. The Centre has substantial experience in capacity building at all levels of the health system to design, plan, implement, and monitor evidence-driven health research activities. This is achieved through various publications and dissemination of research findings in a diverse research focus ranging from hypertension, snake bites, dengue vector, malaria to cancer, in order to inform appropriate action regarding strengthening strategies and implementation of interventions in the country.
Areas of Research Specialization
• Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and communicable diseases (CDs).
• Control of vectors and vector-borne diseases.
• Biomedical and clinical trials research.
• Evaluation of new interventions such as drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics.
• Basic research, clinical trials, epidemiology, operational, and social science research.
• Implementation research on evaluation of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) interventions.
Laboratory Capacity
The Dodoma Centre’s laboratory capacity is designed to facilitate high-quality research. Key features include Real-Time PCR systems for molecular diagnostics, Flow cytometry for immunological studies, Comprehensive sample storage (ultra-freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks). A range of microscopy options, including an inverted microscope and a dark field microscope. The centre is equipped with advanced laboratory facilities that support cutting-edge research. The laboratory is furnished with key equipment including Level II biosafety cabinet (BSC-II), Incubators (one with CO2), BD BACTEC automated blood culture system, Autoclave water distiller machine, Flow cytometer (FACS Calibur) for cell-mediated immunology assays, Automated fluorescent immunoassay system (Standard F2400), Real-Time PCR equipment (including Ultra-fast Point of Care PCR) and ELISA reader and water bath. It has extensive sample storage capacity, including ultra-freezers (-20º, -80º) and a liquid nitrogen container (-196º). It has various microscopy equipment including an inverted microscope for tissue and cell culture. The research lab operates in collaboration with Benjamin Mkapa Hospital and the Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, both KENAS accredited. The centre continues to enhance its laboratory infrastructure, positioning itself as a hub for advanced research in central Tanzania.
Collaborations and Partnerships
NIMR Dodoma has established strong collaborations with numerous national and international institutions to advance its research agenda. Nationally, partners include the University of Dodoma (UDOM), St. John’s University of Tanzania, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), and Sokoine University of Agriculture. Internationally, the centre collaborates with the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow (UK), Karolinska University (Sweden), KAIST and Chung-Ang University (South Korea), as well as diagnostic companies such as Bioneer Corporation and SD Biosensor from South Korea. Additional partnerships include Rokuno Gakuen and Hokkaido Universities of Japan.
Key Achievements
Involved in the implementation of the Ministry of Health intervention through the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) program. The Centre has developed a concept note on establishing a Centre of Excellence in Mathematical Modelling in communicable and non-communicable diseases and mental health. It is currently expanding the research infrastructure with new microbiology and molecular laboratory facilities.
Ongoing Studies
NIMR Dodoma is involved in multiple ongoing research projects focusing on communicable and non-communicable diseases, vector control, and mental health. The centre continues to collaborate with key stakeholders to address the region’s pressing health challenges.
Completed Projects
The centre has successfully completed several significant research projects that have informed public health interventions and policies aimed at improving health outcomes in the central zone of Tanzania. NIMR Dodoma remains committed to generating evidence-based health solutions through innovative research, contributing to the well-being of communities in Tanzania and beyond.
