Mbeya Capacity Statement
The NIMR Mbeya center has 170 talented and experienced staff with diverse research expertise from PhD to Certificate levels. It has 12 well maintained vehicles and 4 standby Generators. The center has a safety & immunology, Tuberculosis (TB) and the mobile laboratories that have maintained accreditation since 2007 (CAP) and 2020 (SADQAS). The labs are enrolled on various EQA programs (CAP, UKNEQAS, IQLS, SMILE MTS and EQUAPOL) with overall 100% success rate on all laboratory assays and are equipped with state-of-the-art, modern automated and manual operated instruments.
Furthermore, the center conducts varied high quality and international regulated research studies on TB, HIV and emerging diseases amongst adults and children. This entail studies in; diagnostics, drug and vaccine trials (phase II/III), operational and implementation studies as well as observational studies. To date, NIMR-Mbeya has so far conducted 8 HIV vaccine trials at phase I/II, over 10 TB drug trials and 2 TB vaccine trials.
There is a well-structured and secured data management department experienced in working with electronic health records and paper source documents and different data management platforms such as: iDataFax, Citrix ClinPlus, OpenClinica, Medidata Rave, Cast, Acasi, Microsoft Access and MySQL. Services run in different servers with a daily automated backup system. Additionally, it supports data analysis and use for decision making, planning and service delivery at health facilities.
The center has a Community Advisory Board (CAB) since 2005 composed of 21 members comprising of varied community representatives. The community engagement team collaborates with CAB, community leaders and other health authorities to participate in World AIDS Day, World TB Day and World HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. Additionally, the team organizes periodic live radio sessions and community sensitization meetings across Mbeya City.
The center has an IT department with three qualified IT professionals with diverse IT skills and knowledge to support health research technology infrastructure. The department supports high speed internet connectivity thus, delivering high performing IT services, offers IT hosted services, IT governance, database systems development and technical support whose strengths lays on the foundation of systems and networks administrations.
