The Director General of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Said Aboud together with Assistant Director responsible for Traditional Medicine at the Ministry of Health, Dr Winifrida Kidima paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in Seoul, South Korea on 19th August 2025.
The Tanzania Ambassador to South Korea, H.E. Togolani Mavura welcomed the officials and appreciated the visit. H.E. informed the two officials on the journey and development of traditional medicine sector in Korea.
The discussion also focused on the available knowledge sharing program that would build capacity on innovation, product development, technology transfer, commercialization of traditional medicine products, initiatives on identification of medicinal plants, startups in traditional medicines, manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), policy development and potentials for research collaboration in clinical trials with Korean institutes.
During the engagement, Prof. Aboud emphasized the need for capacity building among Tanzanian researchers on innovation and product development in order to fully harness the countryโs potentials in medicinal plants. He further emphasized that this aligns with NIMR mandates to conduct research to ensure safety, efficacy, quality and promote the use of traditional medicines in the country.
Dr Kidima explained on the existing enabling environment for traditional medicine services in Tanzania. She also informed of the integration of traditional medicine service into the national healthcare system which is implemented in 14 Regional Referral Hospitals in the country. During the discussion, she emphasized to work together with Korean counterparts to build capacity on medical professionals that provide traditional medicine services in formal setting.
