Taasisi ya Taifa ya Utafiti wa Magonjwa ya Binadamu (NIMR), kupitia Kituo cha Muhimbili, imewajengea uwezo watumishi wa afya 18 wa Hospitali ya Rufaa ya Mkoa Amana (Amana RRH) katika uandishi wa maandiko ya utafiti (Proposal Development), hatua inayolenga kuboresha huduma za afya kwa jamii kupitia tafiti zenye ubora na ushahidi wa kisayansi. Mafunzo hayo ya siku nne yalifanyika kuanzia tarehe 26 hadi 29 Januari 2026 katika hospitali hiyo yakilenga kuwawezesha watoa huduma wa afya kubuni, kuandaa na kuwasilisha mapendekezo bora ya tafiti za kisayansi zinazoweza kupata ufadhili na kuleta matokeo chanya katika sekta ya afya. Kupitia mafunzo hayo ya vitendo, washiriki walipata ujuzi wa kuandaa maandiko ya kisayansi yenye viwango, kuimarisha uwezo wa uandishi wa kitaaluma, kuelewa na kuzingatia maadili ya utafiti pamoja na kutumia takwimu sahihi katika kutatua changamoto za kiafya zinazowakabili wananchi. Akifungua mafunzo hayo, Mganga Mkuu wa Hospitali ya Amana, Dkt. Bryceson Loti Kiweru, alisema utafiti ni nyenzo muhimu isiyoweza kuepukika katika sekta ya afya. “Swala zima la utafiti haliepukiki katika sekta ya afya na inahitajika ushirikiano na taasisi zinazofanya utafiti ili kuboresha huduma za afya nchini,” alisema Dkt. Kiweru. Kwa upande wake, Kaimu Mkuu wa Idara ya Tafiti kutoka kituo cha NIMR Muhimbili, Dkt. Ester Mbutolwe, alisisitiza umuhimu wa matumizi sahihi ya takwimu katika kuibua suluhisho la changamoto za afya. “Kila mtu akijengewa uwezo vizuri anaweza kutoa mchango wake katika kuboresha afya za wananchi. Takwimu sahihi ni msingi wa utafiti wenye matokeo ya kuaminika. Ushirikiano kati ya NIMR na hospitali za rufaa za mkoa ni muhimu,” alisisitiza Dkt. Mbutolwe. Mafunzo hayo ni sehemu ya jitihada za NIMR za kuimarisha tafiti za afya nchini kwa kuwajengea uwezo wataalamu walioko kwenye vituo vya kutolea huduma, ili tafiti zinazofanyika ziweze kutoa majibu ya changamoto halisi za jamii na kuboresha ubora wa huduma za afya nchini. The National Institute for Medical Research – Mbeya Medical Research Centre (NIMR-MMRC) on 10th February 2026 hosted a high-level delegation from Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in a strategic visit aimed at strengthening collaboration in HIV and clinical research. The delegation was led by Commander Colonel (COL) Brianna Perata and accompanied by senior representatives from WRAIR-USA, WRAIR-Tanzania and CDC-Tanzania, as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperation and the Regional Commissioner’s Office in Mbeya.The visit marked a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between WRAIR and NIMR, particularly under PEPFAR-supported HIV research programs, reinforcing joint efforts to advance scientific innovation and improve public health outcomes.The WRAIR delegation was officially received and welcomed at NIMR-MMRC by the Director General of NIMR, Prof. Said Aboud. In a notable highlight of the event, NIMR-MMRC was awarded a Medal of Excellence by COL Brianna Perata in recognition of the outstanding contributions to medical research and public health in Tanzania. During his remarks, Prof. Aboud reaffirmed NIMR’s commitment to advancing high-quality, impactful research through strong global partnerships.During the visit, the delegation received a comprehensive overview of ongoing clinical trials and collaborative research initiatives at the Centre. Presentations were delivered by the Centre Manager, Dr. Bariki Mtafya, and the Director of Research Coordination, Dr. Nyanda Elias Ntinginya, highlighting the Centre’s growing role in HIV and TB research; cohort, epidemiological, vaccines including broad neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs), drugs, therapeutics, biomarkers, diagnostics and preventive therapy.The delegation toured key research facilities including the HIV Vaccine Trial Clinics, the state-of-the-art main laboratory accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and the DAIDS/NIH-certified pharmacy, where ongoing clinical research activities were showcased. The technical teams demonstrated the Centre’s operational excellence and research capacity. Prof. Aboud accompanied the Commander and her delegation throughout the tour, underscoring the importance of the collaboration.The engagement reaffirmed the strong partnership between NIMR-MMRC and WRAIR and emphasized a shared commitment to advancing cutting-edge research to improve health outcomes in Tanzania and beyond. Kiwango cha ugonjwa wa usubi kwa watu wenye kifafa katika eneo la Mahenge, Wilaya ya Ulanga, Mkoa wa Morogoro, kimepungua hadi asilimia 22, huku maambukizi kwa ujumla yakipungua kwa takribani asilimia 40, kwa mujibu wa matokeo ya utafiti wa “Ubunifu wa Njia za Huduma za Kifafa Barani Afrika (EPInA)”. Matokeo hayo yamewasilishwa katika mkutano wa siku mbili unaoendelea katika Hoteli ya Serena Jijini Dar es Salaam, ukiwakutanisha wadau kutoka Wizara ya Afya, Taasisi ya Taifa ya Utafiti wa Magonjwa ya Binadamu (NIMR), Taasisi mbalimbali za Serikali, pamoja na washirika wa maendeleo kutoka Uingereza, Kenya na Ghana. Lengo la mkutano huo ilikuwa ni kujadili matokeo ya utafiti uliofanyika Mahenge, mkoani Morogoro, na kuweka mikakati ya kuendeleza mapambano dhidi ya usubi na kifafa. Akifungua mkutano huo, Katibu Mkuu wa Wizara ya Afya, Dkt. Seif Shekhalaghe, aliyemwakilisha Waziri wa Afya, Mhe. Mohammed Mchengerwa, amesema mafanikio hayo yanaonesha matokeo chanya ya ushirikiano kati ya Serikali, watafiti na jamii. “Haya ni mafanikio makubwa ya jitihada za pamoja. Kupungua kwa kiwango cha maambukizi kwa asilimia 40 ni ishara kuwa tuko kwenye mwelekeo sahihi,” ameeleza Dkt. Shekhalaghe. Aliongeza kuwa ili kutokomeza kabisa tatizo hilo, ni muhimu kuendelea na uimarishaji wa utoaji wa dawa hasa aina ya Ivermectin pamoja na kuongeza elimu kwa jamii. “Niwaombe wananchi waendelee kushiriki kikamilifu katika matumizi ya dawa na kuamini wataalamu wa afya. Kifafa na usubi ni magonjwa yanayozuilika na kutibika,” alisisitiza. Akizungumza kwa niaba ya Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa NIMR, Dkt. George PrayGod, Meneja wa Kituo cha Utafiti cha NIMR Muhimbili amesema utafiti huo umetoa takwimu muhimu zitakazosaidia kuboresha sera na miongozo ya utoaji wa huduma za afya. “Takwimu hizi ni msingi muhimu wa maboresho ya sera na mikakati ya afya ya umma, hususan katika maeneo yenye maambukizi ya usubi na kifafa,” alisema. Kwa upande wake, Mtafiti Kiongozi wa EPInA, Dkt. Bruno Mmbando, alisema tafiti zinaonesha uhusiano wa karibu kati ya usubi na kifafa, ambapo maeneo yenye maambukizi makubwa ya usubi pia huwa na idadi kubwa ya wagonjwa wa kifafa. “Mahenge bado ina changamoto kutokana na mazingira yake ya kijiografia yenye misitu inayochangia mazalia ya vimelea. Hata hivyo, tumeshuhudia mafanikio makubwa ukilinganisha na miaka ya nyuma,” alisema Dkt. Mmbando. Alibainisha kuwa maeneo ya Tukuyu (Mbeya) na Amani (Tanga) tayari yameonesha mafanikio makubwa zaidi, jambo linalotoa matumaini kuwa tatizo hilo linaweza kudhibitiwa kikamilifu. Naye mshirika wa mradi wa EPInA kutoka Chuo Kikuu cha Oxford, Uingereza, Profesa Charles Newton, alisisitiza umuhimu wa ushirikiano wa kimataifa katika mapambano hayo. “Kama tulivyoweza kupiga hatua kubwa katika kudhibiti malaria, tunaweza pia kupunguza kwa kiwango kikubwa kifafa kinachohusishwa na usubi endapo tutaendelea kushirikiana kisayansi na kimkakati,” alisema Profesa Newton. Taasisi ya Taifa ya Utafiti wa Magonjwa ya Binadamu (NIMR) leo, tarehe 8 Januari 2026, imeendesha mkutano wa majadiliano ya sera uliowakutanisha watafiti, watunga sera, watoa maamuzi wa sekta ya afya na wadau mbalimbali, kwa lengo la kuimarisha matumizi ya ushahidi wa kisayansi katika kuandaa na kutekeleza sera zinazohusu maandalizi, kinga na mwitikio wa taifa dhidi ya magonjwa yanayolipuka na kurejea mara kwa mara.Akifungua mkutano huo, Mgeni Rasmi Dkt. Ahmad Mohamed Makuwani, Mkurugenzi wa Huduma ya Afya ya Uzazi, Magonjwa ya Wanawake na Watoto kutoka Wizara ya Afya, akimwakilisha Mganga Mkuu wa Serikali, amesema kuwa majadiliano hayo yanakuja katika kipindi muhimu kwa taifa, ambapo kumekuwa na kuendelea kushuhudiwa kwa milipuko ya magonjwa kama kipindupindu, dengue, COVID-19 na Marburg. Amesema hali hiyo inaweka shinikizo kubwa kwa mifumo ya afya na hivyo kuhitaji sera zinazojengwa juu ya ushahidi madhubuti wa kisayansi.“Mkutano huu ni jukwaa muhimu la kutafakari mazingira ya milipuko ya magonjwa nchini na kuimarisha uwezo wa pamoja wa taifa katika kuzuia, kugundua mapema na kukabiliana na vitisho vya afya ya jamii vya sasa na vya baadaye,” amebainisha Dkt. Makuwani. Ameongeza kuwa majadiliano ya sera ni nyenzo muhimu ya kuunganisha tafiti na maamuzi ya kisera ili kufanikisha uamuzi unaozingatia ushahidi.Aidha, Dkt. Makuwani amesisitiza umuhimu wa kuimarisha tafiti za ndani, ikiwemo utafiti wa tiba asili, akibainisha kuwa uzoefu wa mlipuko wa UVIKO-19 umeonesha mchango wa tiba asili katika kupunguza madhara kwa jamii. Akitoa wito, ameahidi kuwa Serikali itaendelea kuwekeza katika tafiti za tiba asili na mifumo ya kitaifa ya utafiti.Kwa upande wake, Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa NIMR, Profesa Said Aboud, amesema kuwa mkutano huo umeandaliwa mahsusi kushughulikia masuala nyeti yanayohusiana na magonjwa yenye uwezekano wa kusababisha milipuko, huku ukilenga kuhakikisha matokeo ya tafiti yanatafsiriwa na kutumika moja kwa moja katika sera na mipango ya kitaifa.Prof. Aboud ameeleza kuwa mkutano huo ni jukwaa la tafsiri ya maarifa, linalowaunganisha watafiti, watunga sera na watekelezaji ili kujadili ushahidi uliopo, kubadilishana uzoefu na kuandaa mapendekezo yatakayosaidia kuimarisha maandalizi, kinga na mwitikio wa taifa dhidi ya milipuko ya magonjwa.“Tafiti zinaonesha kuwa maandalizi madhubuti dhidi ya milipuko yanategemea mifumo imara ya ufuatiliaji wa magonjwa, nguvu kazi ya afya iliyo imara na minyororo thabiti ya upatikanaji wa vifaa tiba,” ameongeza Prof. Aboud.James Tumain Tengia, mwakilishi kutoka Wizara ya TAMISEMI, ameipongeza NIMR kwa kuandaa mkutano huo, akisema kuwa umefanikiwa kuwakutanisha watafiti, watunga sera na watoa maamuzi ili kuchakata matokeo ya tafiti mbalimbali na kuja na maoni yatakayosaidia kuboresha sera na miongozo ya utoaji wa huduma za afya.Elizabeth Shayo, Mtafiti Mkuu kutoka NIMR, amesema kuwa mkutano huo umekuwa na manufaa makubwa kwa kuwa umetoa fursa ya kujadili namna bora ya kupambana na magonjwa ya mlipuko yanayoweza kutokea nchini.Akitoa majumuisho ya mkutano huo, Dkt. The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) disseminated on 22nd December 2025 research findings from the project titled Genomic characterization of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) Pathogens in Tanzania at the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Mtumba, Dodoma. The event was graced by the Acting DPS Dr Vida Mbaga together with heads of sections in surveillance from the MoH, representatives from ILI/SARI sentinel sites, National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Tanzania underscoring the importance of multisectoral collaboration in addressing public health priorities.Presenting the most salient findings, Dr Juma Kisuse, representing NIMR, presented that the study applied targeted Next-Generation Sequencing (tNGS) technology to comprehensively profile circulating respiratory pathogens and their associated antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. A total of 484 samples were randomly selected from the national ILI/SARI surveillance system and analyzed, covering the period from October 2023 to September 2024 across five geographical zones: Northern, Lake, Central, Coastal, and Southern Highlands. The study revealed a predominance of bacterial pathogens, dominated by Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, compared to the most commonly viruses reported. The findings further revealed a high burden of bacterial and viral co-infections, with 89.5% of patients harbouring 2-14 pathogens. Thirty percent of patients exhibited mixed bacterial and viral co-infections, underscoring the complexity of diagnosis and management of ARI. Moreover, bacterial pathogens circulated year-round with clear peaks in June to December while viral pathogens showed sharper pathogen-specific peaks – CMV in March, Adenovirus in May, and SARS-CoV-2 in January/September. The study findings further indicated a high prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Genes associated with Doxycycline, Beta-lactamases and Sulphonamides.In concuding remarks, NIMR DG, Prof Said Aboud commented that Streptococcus mitis, S pneumoniae and H influenzae infections were more frequent than viruses demonstrating a shift in trend from viruses to bacteria. He commented on the importance to strengthen immunization against Haemophilus influenza type b which is part of penta 5. He remarked to broaden the scope of ARI surveillance from current SARS Cov-2 and influenza virus to detect more pathogens with more possible use of tNGS in order to guide the interventions on ARI. Furthermore, he thanked the entire study team – Dr Mary Mayige, Dr Clara Lubinza, Dr Gibson Kagaruki, Sudi Lwitiho and Dr Seth Misago. A recent study presented at the 7th Africa Continental World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) event has unveiled the “environmental resistome” in Tanzania. Using advanced genomic tools to analyse wastewater and environmental surveillance (WES) from Dar es Salaam and Tanga, pilot sites where the project is being implemented, the study’s preliminary results provide a population-level snapshot of circulating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in environmental ecosystems. The researchers detected signals of resistance to common antimicrobial drugs and pinpointed hotspots of antimicrobial resistance “superbug”. These results offer a complementary tool for surveillance to inform targeted interventions, bridging the One Health gap created by the traditional focus on clinical surveillance, often overlooking the environmental reservoirs of AMR. “Using advanced genomic tools, we tested local wastewater and uncovered a hidden landscape of AMR threats. This environmental surveillance approach provides an early warning tool for public health.” Jackson Claver, Head of Genomics Department, NPHL. Dr Vito Baraka, Principal Scientist and lead Investigator in Tanzania, explained that “WES of pathogens and AMR is a radar of population health, what goes down our drains tells a story about our community health. This wastewater and environmental based surveillance provide a complementary tool for detecting early signals in our communities including AMR threats, informing targeted public health interventions, and protecting our communities. The approach is effective, empowering preventive actions and enabling us to take precise measures to safeguard our antimicrobial agents.”Dr Eric Lyimo, co-Investigator in the study highlighted that: “AMR doesn’t respect boundaries, and its cross-cutting issue that need multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach. AMR genes from farms, hospitals, and households can mix in our wasteways and environment. Therefore, protecting our antibiotics requires a integrated approach across through One Health concept, cutting across all sectors including human, veterinary and agriculture and environmental ecosystems.”The ODIN project, funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP3), is a multinational initiative. The ODIN Consortium brings together North-South partners and integrates high-capacity genomic technologies to advance wastewater surveillance for public health impact. The consortium brings together partners from the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) in Tanzania, the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) in DR Congo, and the Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS) in Burkina Faso together with NORCE (Norway), VIB-UGent (Belgium), the TGHN University of Oxford’s Global Health Network (UK), the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), and Lund University, Sweden. This collaborative platform is dedicated to exchanging technological innovation, strengthening capacity, advancing methodological approaches in WES and translating pathogen genomic data into actionable public health intelligence. In a milestone event for the continent, Tanzania hosted the 7th Africa Continental World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (WAAW) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dar es Salaam from 2nd to 5th December 2025, reaffirming its commitment to combating AMR. The EXPAND-AMR study, led by Professor John Lusingu, Principal Investigator at NIMR Tanga, provided critical insights into overdiagnosis of urinary tract infections and associated antibiotic resistance, demonstrating actionable strategies for improved diagnostics and treatment.Through its engagement, NIMR reinforced the One Health approach, integrating human, animal, agriculture, and environmental health perspectives while delivering evidence-based recommendations to protect Tanzania’s antibiotic resources. By showcasing scientific leadership and strategic direction, NIMR strengthens Tanzania’s position at the forefront of AMR research, policy development, and continental collaboration.The event underscored that combating AMR requires robust laboratory infrastructure, accurate diagnostics, evidence-based treatment, and integrated One Health strategies. Taasisi ya Taifa ya Utafiti wa Magonjwa ya Binadamu (NIMR), kupitia Kituo chake cha Muhimbili, imeendesha mafunzo maalumu ya uandishi wa andiko la kitafiti kwa watumishi wa afya kutoka Hospitali ya Rufaa ya Mkoa Temeke. Mafunzo hayo ya siku tatu, yaliyofanyika kuanzia tarehe 26 hadi 28 Novemba 2025, yalilenga kuwajengea uwezo washiriki katika kubuni, kuandaa na kuwasilisha mapendekezo bora ya tafiti za kisayansi.Katika mafunzo hayo, washiriki walipata fursa ya kufanya mazoezi kwa vitendo kuhusu hatua muhimu za uandishi wa andiko la utafiti, ikiwemo kuandaa mapendekezo yenye ubora, kuimarisha uwezo wa uandishi wa kisayansi, kuelewa na kutekeleza maadili ya utafiti, pamoja na kubadilisha mawazo ya kitaalamu na kuwa tafiti zenye matokeo chanya na zinazoweza kupata ufadhili.Akizungumza wakati wa kufunga mafunzo hayo kwa niaba ya Mkurugenzi Mkuu, Mkurugenzi wa Kukuza na Kuratibu Tafiti NIMR (DRCP) Dkt. The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) has launched a specialized training program to members and secretariats of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), aimed at strengthening national capacity to oversee clinical trials in line with the highest scientific and ethical standards. This is the second training after the first one which was conducted to clinical trial researchers from 24th to 26th November 2025 as part of the similar initiative of the project.Speaking during the official opening of the training, NIMR Director General, Prof. Said Aboud, said the initiative forms part of the national strategy to enhance the country’s clinical research framework at a time when rapid technological advancements and the growth of health research demand robust ethical and regulatory systems. He emphasized that the training is designed to enhance the efficiency of IRBs in receiving, analyzing, and reviewing research proposals involving human participants, while ensuring that rights, safety, and welfare of trial participants are fully protected.Providing an overview of the training, Dr. Obadia Bishoge, Coordinator of the TRACE Project and Deputy Secretary of the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NatHREC), explained that the initiative is part of the implementation of the TRACE (Trial Regulation and Clinical Ethics Optimization) Project, which is being carried out in Tanzania, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria with funding from the Gates Foundation. He noted that the project aims to transform Africa’s currently fragmented and largely manual ethics and regulatory systems into harmonized, efficient, and digitally supported processes.Dr. Bishoge further outlined that TRACE seeks to build capacity for national ethics committees and regulatory agencies, harmonize policies and guidelines to align with regional and international standards, strengthen digital systems such as RIMS and NREIMS to streamline submissions and reviews, and enhance clinical trial oversight through improved GCP and GCLP monitoring, reporting, and inspections. He added that the project also intends to support IRBs in securing accreditation and strengthening the financial sustainability of the ethics review model.Prof. Aboud further noted that Tanzania’s ethics system operates through coordinated roles of the NIMR Medical Research Coordinating Committee (MRCC), NatHREC, and delegated accredited IRBs at institutional levels, ensuring that ethical oversight is effectively implemented from institutional to national platform.The two-day training, organized by NIMR in collaboration with TMDA, focuses on strengthening participants’ understanding of ethical issues in clinical research, identifying and mitigating potential risks, ensuring fair benefit-sharing, preventing research misconduct and improving overall quality in the conduct of clinical trials. Participants were drawn from various IRBs across the country and were taken through key thematic areas including Overview of Clinical Trial Regulation and Oversight in Tanzania, Accreditation Requirements and Processes for IRECs/IRBs, Workflow Optimization to Reduce Review and Approval Timelines; Effective Review of Clinical Trial Protocols: Ethical and Scientific Considerations, NatHREC SOPs, and the Handling of Notifications, SAE, and SUSAR Reports.Participants are expected to return to their institutions with enhanced knowledge that will improve integrity, transparency, and efficiency within the national clinical trial ecosystem. This training marks a significant milestone in building a trustworthy and globally competitive clinical trial environment in Tanzania.
