Dr. Emanuel Peter Lyimo is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) with research focus on natural therapeutics development. He is a member of Pharmaceutical Society of Tanzania (PST) and currently serves as a Manager of NIMR’s Traditional Medicine Research Centre. Dr. Lyimo serves on technical advisory bodies, including the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NatHREC), clinical trial sub-committee of NatHREC, Traditional and alternative Medicine research committee among others. With over 11 years of experience at NIMR, Dr. Lyimo has led multiple research teams in the design, coordination, and implementation of health research projects, particularly those focused on traditional medicine and public health. He earned his PhD in Natural Products from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda. Before obtaining his doctorate degree he had a Bachelor in Pharmacy from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health and Allied Sciences, India, and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from Manipal University, India (2011).

His research led to the development of several natural therapeutics including, GlycoMelOk capsule for type 2 diabetes mellitus, WarbuDent herbal toothpaste for healthy gum, nimrherb soap for acne care and healthy skin and various skin care herbal products. Dr. Lyimo has published more than 30 scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals in the areas of traditional medicine, natural product development, and public health.

Currently, he is leading research initiatives focused on: Developing natural products for erectile dysfunction, creating a national inventory of commonly used medicinal plants in Tanzania and forging research collaborations both at national and regional level to drive evidence based traditional medicine integration agenda.
