Athanas Dustan Mhina

RESEARCH OFFICER

Athanas Dustan Mhina is a RESEARCH OFFICER working with the National Institute for Medical Research at Tanga Research Centre in Tanzania. He holds a Master of Philosophy (Microbiology) degree from the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Microbiology and Zoology from the University of Dar es Salaam.

His area of research interest includes the epidemiology of multidrug-resistant bacteria, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in humans, Risk factors for colonization and infection by multidrug-resistant bacteria, Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).

He is currently coordinating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) surveillance at two health facilities in Tanga city. The surveillance aims to monitor AMR data and share it with the international database (WHOnet).

He aims to contribute to public health interventions that improve AMR awareness and Infection Prevention and Control strategies, including hand hygiene and surface decontamination.
