Mwanaidi Omary

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Ms. Mwanaidi Omary is a Research Assistant at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), based at the Traditional Medicine Research Centre, where she has been serving since March 2023. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Botanical Sciences from the University of Dar es Salaam, awarded in 2021.

Her research interests lie in the field of ethnobotany and medicinal plant science, particularly focusing on the discovery, documentation, and scientific validation of traditional medicinal plant species. She is passionate about exploring the therapeutic potential of natural resources through phytochemical analysis, formulation development, and quality control of herbal medicines.

Ms. Omary is actively involved in: Ethnobotanical studies to identify and preserve indigenous knowledge on medicinal plants, Pharmacognostic and physicochemical evaluations to ensure the safety and efficacy of herbal products, Herbal medicine formulation development, contributing to the advancement of traditional medicine into standardized therapeutic options

Ms. Omary was awarded the 2025 AFRIAK Fellowship by CODESRIA in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and is currently conducting research focusing on “Documenting Indigenous Medical Knowledge Related to Plant-Based Remedies Used for Treating Infectious Diseases in Southern Tanzania.”
