Dr. Safari Kinung’hi was also the Tanzania PI of the larger scale multicentre Water Infrastructure for Schistosomiasis Endemic Regions (WISER) research project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Dr. Safari Kinung’hi is a WHO/AFRO advisor and consultant on schistosomiasis and STH and a member and chair of the expert advisory committee of the Tanzania national NTD control programme. Dr. Safari Kinung’hi is a recipient of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) George Mercer ward 2023 for outstanding research work on schistosomiasis. As a result of this funding, the molecular entomology laboratory was renovated and equipped with state of the art laboratory equipment. An insectary unit was also established. Another key achievement is the re-introduction of research on snail intermediate hosts and their role in the transmission of schistosomiasis alongside use of molecular techniques in schistosomiasis research. Establishment of strong internal and external research collaboration networks and research training programmes of Tanzanian MSc and PhD students at NIMR Mwanza centre in collaboration with Tanzanian universities has been another achievement. These research achievements have the potential to create more research opportunities for NIMR Mwanza centre and NIMR in general.
