The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Amani Research Centre has completed a rigorous annual surveillance and inspection by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), reinforcing its position as a leading OECD Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Accredited Testing Facility for vector control research and evaluation in Africa.

The two-day inspection that was conducted from 26th to 27th June 2025, was led by SANAS Programme Manager Mr. Shedrack Phophi. The audit focused on evaluating the Centre’s compliance with OECD GLP principles, which govern the quality, integrity, and reliability of non-clinical health and environmental studies. The inspection outcome was highly positive, confirming NIMR Amani’s continued adherence to international standards.

In 2023, the NIMR Amani Centre made history by becoming the first public testing facility in East Africa to receive OECD GLP accreditation and certification for research, development, and evaluation of novel vector control tools and products. The certification was granted by SANAS under Facility Compliance Number G0035.

This milestone has enabled the Centre to support Phase I and II laboratory trials and Phase III community-based randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for major vector-borne disease interventions. The Centre has since become a trusted partner for industrial, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical companies seeking WHO pre-qualification for their products.
Speaking after the inspection, Amani Centre Manager Dr. William Kisinza representing NIMR Director General expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort behind this achievement.

“This successful inspection underscores our unwavering commitment to quality, scientific integrity, and global standards. We sincerely thank NIMR management for their support and our dedicated GLP team for their professionalism and hard work,” said Dr. Kisinza.
The Amani Centre also extended its sincere appreciation to SANAS for organizing and conducting the surveillance inspection, and for providing valuable recommendations for continued improvement.

The Centre’s accreditation enhances its capacity to generate high-quality, internationally accepted data on the efficacy of vector control products, contributing to public health advancements in Tanzania and beyond. As part of a growing network of certified facilities in Africa, NIMR Amani Centre continues to play a vital role in the fight against vector-borne diseases.
This accomplishment reflects NIMR’s broader vision to become a continental leader in health research and innovation, delivering evidence-based solutions for Africa’s pressing health challenges.
