Michael A. Munga,

PRINCIPAL RESEARCH OFFICER I

Dr. Michael A. Munga is a Principal Research Officer I at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), specializing in Health Systems and Policy Research. He holds a PhD in Public Health (Health Systems Management) from the Centre for International Health (CIH), University of Bergen, Norway. His doctoral work examined the unequal distribution of health workers in Tanzania, focusing on its causes, consequences, and potential remedies. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health (Health Economics) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a BA in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

With over 20 years of research experience, Dr. Munga has built a robust career exploring key issues in health systems, including: Human resources for health and workforce distribution, Decentralization-centralization dynamics and their impact on recruitment and retention, Health worker location preferences and determinants, Task-shifting practices in Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (RMNCH) and HIV/AIDS services and Integration of RMNCH and HIV services

Dr. Munga has participated in numerous training programs in health systems analysis, monitoring and evaluation, health sector financing, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. He has authored or co-authored over 15 peer-reviewed publications in both local and international journals, many as lead author. Known for his analytical rigor and field-based research, Dr. Munga continues to provide evidence to inform health policy and practice in Tanzania and the region.
