Dr Elizabeth H Shayo is a Principal Research Scientist of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) with BA, MA (Social Sciences and Medical Anthropology), PhD (International Health) and Post Doctoral Associate (Health Systems). Dr Shayo has worked with NIMR for 22 years in different research projects both quantitative and qualitative in nature. As  a Principal Research Scientist with Social Science background, she has conducted a number of research in the areas of malaria, HIV/AIDS, Non-Communicable Diseases, Tuberculosis, Epidemic diseases including Ebola Virus Disease and COVID19, Disease Surveillance, Maternal and Child health, Gender-based violence, Mental health, climate change, Socio-cultural determinants of health and health systems. She has been a resource person in qualitative research and in research communication. She has knowledge and skills in delivering training on the development of policy briefs and research methodology and to facilitate policy dialogue to share research findings with policy makers. Dr Shayo has further conducted a number of studies focusing on the governance in the decentralized health care system. She has  advocated for community empowerment in the management of different diseases including training of potential stakeholders such as community leaders, traditional health practitioners and community health workers. She has also coordinated Social Science component on linkages, and acceptability of integrated health care services.  She supervises master’s and PhD students and provide mentorship to junior researchers and interns.  She is currently the Head of Health Systems, Policy and Translational Research Section at NIMR and a Leader in the Social Sciences and One Health Systems at SACIDS. She has been the overall best scientist at NIMR (twice) and at Center level (four times). Dr Shayo has participated in writing six  books, 23 technical reports,  70 peer reviewed publications and seven policy briefs.
