Mr. Paul Martine Hayuma is an employee of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). He works as Senior Health Laboratory Scientist II and he is currently the Laboratory Manager of the Amani Biomedical Laboratory (AMBRELA) at NIMR Tanga Medical Research Centre. He also serves as the Centre’s focal person for facilitating Diseases Surveillance Section at NIMR HQ. Mr. Martine holds a Master of Science Parasitology and Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology & Laboratory sciences degrees. Mr. Martine has a vast experience in Molecular biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Virology, Bacteriology and Parasitology. His area of expertise in research includes Malaria genomics, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) quantitative and qualitative Laboratory analyses, Immunology of Lymphatic Filariasis and Onchocerciasis.

Mr. Martine has also been serving as World Health Organization (WHO) International consultant for Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis. In the year 2018 Mr. Martine worked with ministry of Health in Malawi and successfully conducted an Evaluation of Elimination of Onchocerciasis in Malawi Oncho-endemic areas. Furthermore, in 2018 Mr. Martine worked with Zanzibar Ministry of health and WHO in the two Islets of Unguja and Pemba for Lymphatic Filariasis Pre-transmission assessments survey (Pre-TAS) and transmission assessment survey (TAS).

He is skillful with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques for antimalarial drug levels in human plasma. Mr. Martine has worked with the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in identifying Onchocerca volvulus infection in human blood spotted on dried blood spots (DBS) “Ov-16 horse radish peroxidase Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Ov-16 HRP ELISA)”, the CDC Ov16 AP ELISA and Wuchereria bancrofti ELISA (Wb 123 ELISA). He is competent in molecular pool screening for identification of Onchecraca volvulus in blackflies using O-150 Sequence specific oligonucleotide probes and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (O150 PCR -ELISA). Currently Martine is working with HIV 1 viral load and early infant diagnosis of HIV using COBAS AmpliPrep and CoBAS TaqMan platform at NIMR Tanga, this is a collaborative work between Tanga Reginal Referral Hospital, African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) and NIMR Tanga.  Also Mr. Martine is currently involved in WHO Project entitled “Establishing Serologic Prevalence Threshold for Stopping Onchocerciasis Mass Drug Administration in Tukuyu”. He has written and published various publications inpeer reviewed journals.
