Dr. Joseph Chilongani
Dr. Joseph Elieza Chilongani, is a “Principal Research Officer at Dodoma NIMR Centre. He is a distinguished figure in the realm of public health research and advocacy, embodies a rich tapestry of academic prowess, extensive fieldwork experiences, and leadership engagements. He was appointed by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania to work as a District Commissioner for Meatu District, Simiyu for 5 years (2016-2021). Dr. Chilongani embarked on his academic journey at Kazan State Medical University, Russia, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in General Medicine between 1991 and 1998. Subsequently, his quest for knowledge led him to pursue a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on Health Economics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, from 2002 to 2003. His dedication to combating tropical diseases propelled him to undertake a Diploma in Research on Tropical Diseases at the Nagasaki Institute of Tropical Diseases, Japan, in 2005-2006, and a Certificate in International Course in Research Ethics in Nagasaki, Japan, in 2005.
Dr. Chilongani’s professional journey has been marked by profound contributions to medical research and policy advocacy. Since 2000, he has served as a Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Mwanza Centre, Tanzania, where he has spearheaded numerous research endeavors focusing on disease epidemiology, preventive interventions, and economic evaluations. His leadership roles include serving as a Research Coordinator for collaborative studies between NIMR and esteemed institutions like the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the World Health Organization (WHO), among others. Throughout his career, Dr. Chilongani has demonstrated a commitment to continuous learning and skill development, evident in his participation in various short courses and training programs. His leadership experience extends to his roles as Vice Chairman of the Tanzania Public Health Association (TPHA) Mwanza Branch and membership in esteemed organizations such as the Medical Association of Tanzania (MAT) and the Lake Zone Research Ethics Review Board. Dr. Chilongani’s scholarly contributions have left an indelible mark on the field of public health, as evidenced by his numerous publications and presentations in reputable journals and conferences worldwide
