Vitus Nyigo
Dr. Vitus Alberto Nyigo is a Phytochemist and Principal Research officer at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). Currently, he is the Center Manager of the Traditional Medicines Center (TMC) of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). He has training background in chemistry, biology and education (B.Sc. Ed) in the basic degree and specialized in natural products chemistry and value additions in the postgraduate training. Dr. Nyigo worked with the Tanzania industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) in 2002 before joining NIMR in 2003. He has a vast experience in ethnobotanical surveys, herbal medicines extraction, isolation and characterization of active chemical ingredients from medicinal plants using various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques respectively. He is also experienced in diverse biological assays techniques (including ascertainment of efficacy and toxicities) for herbal medicines including pure chemical ingredients. Dr. Nyigo has also been involved in product formulation which is also among center roles. Apart from working in the area of traditional medicine, Dr. Nyigo has been involved in other health related research activities from other departments of the Institute as part of diversification programs, Dr. Nyigo has published several papers in different peer reviewed health related journals.
